To achieve an injury-free workplace in Sarnia-Lambton.

To facilitate a unique partnership of experts from Education, Labour, Contractors and Industry to improve safety performance in our community.

To create an injury-free environment through the tripartite collaboration so everyone can go home safely at the end of each day.

The Sarnia-Lambton Industrial Educational Cooperative (IEC), a 20-member cooperative, was born out of the imagination and foresight of three executives from Suncor, NOVA and Lambton College in the early 1990s, having two distinct objectives:

  1. To improve the competitiveness of the Sarnia-Lambton industrial community through high-quality cost-effective and timely training; educational programs and services.
  2. To ensure a sustainable supply of well trained and qualified workers to meet a forecasted shortage of aging baby boomers in process operations, skilled maintenance and instrumentation trades, not only in Sarnia-Lambton but across Ontario.

In 2001, a major milestone occurred when the IEC members teamed up with local construction contractors and building trades to form a unique Sarnia-Lambton Safety Partnership Model with a vision of “Zero incidents by choice”.

Today, the IEC facilitates the growth of an injury-free culture by developing training standards; developing and delivery products and services; accrediting and auditing competencies; and maintaining training records with the engagement of experts from the unique partnership – Education, Labour, Contractors and Industry.

The Safety Partnership has two main objectives:

  • identify and implement opportunities to improve safety performance and efficiencies
  • collaborate in the development of safety standards and programs

Our success over the past 10 years has attracted visits by Ontario Labour Ministers and senior officials of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) which have provided strong affirmation that our region’s unique partnership approach to safety is setting a recognized benchmark for other regions across the province.

Sarnia-Lambton continues to achieve the best safety performance in the province by setting its own world-class standards for intensive safety orientation and ongoing safety training.

The IEC has gained widespread recognition internationally for helping organizations achieve world-class safety performance through safety and leadership development programs. The Safety Partnership today represents over 250 companies and provides over 40 customized safety training programs and services for more than 10,000 workers.

Recently, we have been invited to share our Safety Partnership Model with other safety associations nationally. Our passion to create an Injury-Free Environment is what makes  the IEC Safety Partnership unique. Our unwavering commitment is to ensure everyone goes home safely at the end of each day.
